Citrus Greening

Oranges with citrus greening disease

(San Juan, Texas) The USDA and Customs have increased inspections of Mexican produce entering Texas after citrus greening was detected.

Citrus greening, also known as Huanglongbing, is a bacterial disease carried by the Asian citrus psyllid which causes plant stunting, improper color and bitter taste.
The disease, Huanglongbing, is found throughout Asia, the Indian subcontinent and neighboring islands, the Saudi Arabian peninsula, and in the Sao Paulo State of Brazil.

In 2005, Huanglongbing was discovered in backyard citrus in southern Florida.
And now, 2012, citrus greening disease is in Texas.
