New York Mom Kills Baby

(Queens, New York) A 24-year-old local woman, Dawa Lama, has pleaded guilty to manslaughter for dumping her newborn baby into a hospital garbage can.

Police say the Queens woman was arrested in May of last year after her daughter was discovered in critical condition in the trashcan of a bathroom at Elmhurst Hospital Center.

She died a week later.

Sentencing has been scheduled for April 16.

According to Lama's defense attorney, she is remorseful. In any event, significant prison time is expected and likely deportation after completion of her term.
