(Cancun, Mexico) On Sunday, seven people were found strangled to death in the yard of a local house after police received an anonymous tip.
According to Cancun Police Chief Arturo Olivarez Mendiola:
The victims – five men and two women – were bound and blindfolded, but the bodies did not have gunshot wounds, the police chief said. The killings are believed to be drug-related.
“We have two young girls of around 20 and the rest are older ... All of them were in the yard, in the back of the house,” Olivarez Mendiola said.
The war on drugs launched by former President Felipe Calderon, who was in office from 2006 to 2012, left about 70,000 people dead, or an average of 32 per day, in Mexico, officials say.
