Leading the March to Baghdad

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was released from US custody in 2009. It's not clear why.
As he was being released from an American detention camp in Iraq in 2009, the man who will go on to head the powerful ISIS group issued a menacing warning to his former captors.

‘I’ll see you guys in New York,’ Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi reportedly told U.S. Army reservists from Long Island who had been guarding him at Camp Bucca near the Kuwaiti border.
Camp Bucca was named after an FDNY fire marshal killed in the 9/11 attacks. It was staffed largely by New York firefighters and police officers serving in Iraq as reservists.

Baghdadi was turned over to Iraqi forces, who then let him go. They have been repaid as you might expect. Baghdadi has been summarily executing those serving the Iraqi government by the hundreds.
The outcome of the conflict remains to be determined. So far, it appears the US hasn't provided any help. Meanwhile, mass murder in Iraq continues.
