Florida Woman Gets Prison for Sex with Boy - Updated

(Apopka, Florida) Stacey Sheldon waived her right to a jury trial and was found guilty by the court. Judge Alicia Latimore then sentenced Sheldon to three years in prison.

"Ms Sheldon just accepted responsibility in her case,” said Assistant State Attorney Ryan Vescio. “She's going to be going to prison three yrs will be on record as a sex offender for two years following."

Vesico said Sheldon did the right thing.

"She gave a confession to law enforcement,” he said. “We recovered a video of her and the child victim engaged in the sexual activity so there really weren't many issues at trial.”

According to Vescio the victim's sister found Sheldon's cell phone with pictures of Sheldon having sex with the boy after Sheldon accidently left it at the boys home last September.

The boy later told authorities that they had met the previous July and had engaged in sex acts several times before getting caught. (sic all)

The victim's family concurred with the disposition of the case.

Sex with Boy Video Leads to Woman's Arrest

(Apopka, Florida) A 31-year-old local woman, Stacey Sheldon, has been arrested by Orange County Sheriff's deputies for allegedly engaging in sex with a 16-year-old boy. Sheldon faces charges of committing a sex act with a 16-year-old.

According to the Orange County sex crimes unit, Stacey Sheldon accidentally left her cell phone at the boy's house.

The boy's sister discovered Sheldon's phone and found the video clips showing Sheldon having sex with her brother, deputies said.

Sheldon was booked into custody at the Orange County Jail with bond set at $1,000.

Pictures on a cell phone, eh? It's pretty dumb to collect evidence on yourself.

Police Seek Skirt-Lifting Mystery Man

(Berkeley, California) Police are searching for a man believed to be responsible for accosting women near the UC Berkeley campus and lifting their skirts. Eleven such incidents have been documented thus far, including an occurrence from last year that was belatedly reported this week.

The woman was accosted between 1 and 2 a.m. Oct. 31 on Piedmont Avenue near Dwight Way, but initially thought she was the victim of a drunken prank, Frankel said. She was walking from a fraternity party with another woman, who was wearing a knee-length coat and was not victimized, Frankel said.

All the sexual batteries have happened south of campus since October. One woman was victimized twice, months apart. Most of the women were walking home from weekend fraternity or sorority parties between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., police said.

The suspect is described as 20-ish or 30-ish, medium build, 5' 10" with short dark hair.

Tips are sought by Berkeley and UC Berkeley Police Departments.

Hispanic Laborer Dies in Farm Accident

(Burley, Idaho) A 20-something Hispanic farm laborer [name withheld pending notification of relatives] died yesterday after being chewed up inside a feed mixer.

The man worked at a pig farm that is located about 20 east (sic) of Burley. The farm is owned by Reed Gibby.

Deputies say the man's fellow workers heard screaming and ran to assist, but he died at the scene from his injuries.

Cassia County Sheriff's deputies are investigating.

The Reason Women Are Inferior

(Medina, Saudi Arabia) Female Saudi writer Suhaila Zeinul Abideen Hammad has penned several articles complaining about the unequal treatment received by women in the kingdom. In response, a column by Osama Ahmed Al-Subaie in today's Arab News displays the following.

Women are incomplete in our society. They will remain incomplete and will always be considered inferior. Their participation in literary clubs, journalism training courses, conferences and seminars would lead to them mixing with men.

This would open the door for seduction, a source of corruption. Women would then become shameless and coveted by men.

So there. In Saudi society, women are second-class citizens because they are a source of corruption. The same thinking is presumably prevalent throughout Islam.

Frankly, I believe the philosophy fails to give proper attribution to biological weaknesses in men. Rather than women being a source of corruption, it's the men who are incapable of managing the complexities of male-female relationships without being corrupted.

Giant Rat Caught

(Fuzhou, China) Reportedly, it's a bamboo rat that usually lives underground and feeds on bamboo. On the contrary, I would contend that rats are vermin, will live where there is food, and will eat anything.

The rat, which weighed six pounds and had a 12-inch tail, was caught at the weekend in a residential area of Fuzhou, a city of six million people on China's south coast.

The ratcatcher, who was only named as Mr Xian, said he swooped for the rodent after seeing a big crowd of people surrounding it on the street.

He told local Chinese newspapers that he thought the rat might be a valuable specimen, or a rare species, and had to muster up his courage before grabbing its tail and picking it up by the scruff of its neck.

"I did it, I caught a rat the size of a cat!" he shouted out afterwards, according to the reports. Mr Xian is believed to still be in possession of the animal, after stuffing into a bag and departing the scene.

Bamboo rats are regularly sold for meat. Good eats, apparently. Oddly, thus far there has been no comment from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

New York Post Cartoon: Is this 'Racially Offensive'?

"There's a political cartoon in today's New York Post that some social activists are questioning this morning. The Sean Delonas drawing morphs together two stories in the news this week -- the Obama administration's economic stimulus bill and the pet chimp that police shot to stop his attack on a Connecticut woman.

The cartoon, which shows police shooting a monkey, seems to imply that a monkey (who some are interpreting as President Obama) wrote the stimulus bill.

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton called the cartoon "racially offensive"

Idaho Woman Gets Prison in Sex Case - Updated

(Canyon County, Idaho) Despite a plea agreement that specified recommendations for probation by both the prosecution and defense, 3rd District Judge Gregory Culet sentenced Laura Hester to prison for up to 10 years and imposed a permanent order that she not contact her victim..

Culet ordered Hester incarcerated because new evidence indicated she violated his previous order that she not contact the teenager.

Prosecutors accused Hester of making arrangements with a third party to establish a phone line so she could contact the boy in January. At the time, she had been released from custody and was awaiting her next court appearance.

Hester's attorney, John Prior, called the accusations "bold allegations" with no proof that Hester contacted the teen. But Culet said the evidence was "clear and convincing," and that telephone records and statements from the boy's mother and grandmother, who overheard the boy's end of the conversation, corroborated this account.

"I let you out of jail on a serious offense with one condition: no contact. And you violated it," Culet said to Hester. "Your credibility is gone. The violation of my order and contact of the victim is too much of a danger signal."

Culet said he would review the case within six months to reevaluate the possibility of probation. Otherwise, Hester will be eligible for parole in five years.

Idaho Woman Guilty in Boy Sex Case

(Nampa, Idaho) A 33-year-old local woman, Laura Louise Hester, pleaded guilty to felony injury to a child, a charge reduced in accordance with a plea agreement with the prosecution to avoid trial.

Deputy Canyon County Prosecutor Aaron Bazzoli said at Friday's hearing that the boy's mother agreed to Hester's release while she awaits sentencing.

"She said she doesn't care whether she (Hester) spends another day in jail. She just wants her held accountable," Bazzoli said.

The mother's recorded telephone conversations with her son and with Hester were key evidence in the case, according to court records. In one call, the boy told his mom he had sex with Hester on two occasions and used a condom. In the other call, Hester told the boy's mother that she had sex with him once and also said she loved the boy and knew the difference in their ages was a problem.

Nampa police arrested Hester in August. According to court records, she admitted to police she had sex with the boy once. She said she knew it was wrong and blamed her actions on alcohol and her attraction to the teen.

Sentencing is scheduled for January 23rd. The conviction for child injury carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, however, it's reported that prosecutors and the defense counsel have agreed to recommend probation. District Judge Gregory Culet, however, is not bound by the recommendation.

We didn't expect what you see in this picture. This is the square of the Italian Parliament in Rome, Piazza Montecitorio: You can see the Palace on top of the square, and in front a lot of Israeli flags. That was last night from 6:30 to 9:30 pm. What you cannot see here, is the extraordinary number of members of Parliament, about 100 from all political sides, that took the stage during this time: for about three hours we were speaking about the role of Israel, its right to self defense, its moral height, its fight on behalf of us all, of our civilization and values, against the wild hate of the Islamic jihad represented by Hamas.

It seems to me that for the first time in the too long history of the Arab/Israeli conflict, apart from a minority of crazy leftists and fascists that took the street with anti-Semitic slogans, we have achieved a huge consensus on one critical point: this is not a local conflict, there is nothing in it that reminds us of a peace theme that has characterized the Palestinian issue. This is an attack against the western world, and Iran is behind it.

What happens today, at least in Italy, is the defeat and fall of the leftist ideologies: ideology that has allowed justification of all the most violent crimes and most disgusting verbal attacks. If Arafat launched the terrorist Intifada, if he promoted the martyrdom of children in public speeches, the ideologists were ready to justify him with the issues of occupation, the Palestinian misery and loss of any hope. Not so with Hamas.

History, in Italy, has brought to a profound crisis the ideology of revolution and the justification of any cruel attack against a so-called unjust imperialist order. That time is over, nobody will see Hamas as the resolution of the problem and not even as the problem itself. I think that the word "peace" has lost that healing meaning that it once had. The new non-ideological point of view sees that there is no peace when one of the contenders doesn't want it, and that even if the world in the short run asks for a truce, in the long run it hopes for the defeat of Hamas.

Last night, many people, Ministers and Members of Parliament, composed a very new, interesting mix of opinions. I think that when you are not overwhelmed by exotic thirdworldism, the images of children educated as hate machines, the speeches of jihad leaders, from Ahmadinejad to Nasrallah, to Haniyeh, that deny the holocaust and promise death to Jewish and Christians alike, you are left only with disgust. Westerners, thank God, can still be disgusted by uncivilized levels of political speech.

But most of all, in the Parliament square, many of the Parliament Members said: "I love Israel". You can't imagine how many.

Brits Order Surveillance of Pub Customers

(London, England) Boy, did George Orwell have it right or what?

Big Brother-style plans to force pubs to install CCTV cameras raise ‘serious privacy concerns’, the surveillance watchdog has warned.

Police are telling pubs, clubs, restaurants and off-licences they will not support their licensing applications unless they agree to train the intrusive cameras on their customers.

Owners also have to promise to hand over to the police any CCTV footage requested.

So, if you wake up with a hangover after a wild night with friends and don't remember much, just ask the police to show you the videotape. The police will be able to tell what you ate, what you drank, how much you drank, who you talked to and even how much a tip you left.

Yep, good times -- all on video.

Obama Pork Stimulus Loaf

As I write, I have a bacon explosion in the oven. I know that to truly be a bacon explosion, the creators recommend a smoker be used. Unfortunately, I don't have one and am using the oven.

Nevertheless, I thought it was appropriate to celebrate President Obama's massive government handout signed today. Loaded with pork? You bet and there's no better way to trumpet pork than with more pork. The bacon explosion does just that.

So, in about an hour, I will be taking the unofficial Obama Pork Stimulus Loaf, aka bacon explosion, out of the oven. I'll let you know how it comes out.

Police Arrest Girl, 14, for Texts in Class

(Wauwatosa, Wisconsin) For apparently not following the algebra teacher's instructions to look at numbers instead of texting them, a 14-year-old female Wauwatosa High School student was arrested.

At first, according to the police report, she denied having a phone. However, two of her class mates declared that this was not true. The phone, a Samsung Cricket, was then recovered from her person. From "the buttocks area," to be precise.

The girl will face a charge of disorderly conduct during a court appearance on April 20.

Seems a bit much to me but, to be fair, the police stated that the girl is somewhat of a troublemaker.

No Free Joe at the County Jail

(Painesville, Ohio) Free coffee will no longer be provided to inmates at the Lake County Jail. It's a cost-cutting measure expected to save $20,000.

Ramos and Compean Released

Former Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean have been released early from prison. After their sentences were commuted by President Bush, they were scheduled to be released on March 20.

Until March 20, they will be on house arrest. A term of probation has also been mentioned.

To commemorate the Ramos and Compean legal episode, I'd like to recommend that a railroad line or train be named after them.

France guilty of deporting Jews in WWII

France has had something of an undeserved reputation for tolerance since the butchers of the French revolution were the first to declare the emancipation of the Jews. That declaration did not affect basic French attitudes, however -- as the Dreyfus case of the 1890s showed. And we see below some final acceptance of the fact that the French of WWII fully "understood" the Nazi antipathy to Jews. And guess what? French Jews are being forced out of France right now -- with many going to Israel -- because of the failure of the French State to defend them from Muslim attacks. It seems that the French of today "understand" Muslim attitudes too

France's top administrative court ruled today that the state was responsible for the deportation of French Jews during World War Two, but appeared to close the door on major new compensation for victims' families. Some 76,000 Jews were arrested in France between 1942 and 1944 and transported in appalling conditions to Nazi concentration camps such as Auschwitz. Only 3000 returned.

Today's landmark ruling by the Conseil d'Etat court establishes a legal recognition of France's role in the deportations and was welcomed by Jewish organisations. "The Conseil d'Etat recognises the error and responsibility of the state," the court said. "This persecution, in a total break with the values and principles ... enshrined in the declaration of human rights and the traditions of the Republic, inflicted exceptional damage of extreme gravity," it said.

Former President Jacques Chirac was the first French leader to acknowledge state complicity in the deportations in an historic speech in 1995, breaking with past efforts to dissociate France from the collaborationist Vichy regime. His recognition of French involvement opened the way for victims' families to seek compensation and the authorities have since given hundreds of millions of euros to plaintiffs.

The Conseil d'Etat issued its ruling after a minor court sought guidance over the liability of the state in the case brought by daughter of a deportee. The top administrative court said the junior courts could decide on compensation, but added that the state had already met its obligations and respected European norms. "Taken together, these various measures ... have compensated as much as is possible ... the losses suffered as a result of the actions of the state, which collaborated with the deportation," the ruling said.

Serge Klarsfeld, a famous French Nazi hunter whose own father was deported from France, welcomed the ruling. "This ruling is satisfying," he was quoted as saying by Le Figaro newspaper website. "France is now showing itself to be a leader amongst countries facing up to their past." He added that reparations was no longer a major issue. "Those who are currently seeking more compensation have often already received something."

Corruption in Mexico

(Mexico City) No surprise here. The former top cop for Mexico's Organized Crime Bureau has been arrested and charged with corruption. Investigators found that Noe Ramirez received almost one-half million dollars for passing secrets and collaborating with the Sinaloa drug cartel.

Ramirez headed the federal investigation unit called SIEDO.

Move along now. Corruption is more common in Mexico than tortillas.

Granny Robber Sentenced to Prison - Updated

(Hamilton, Ohio) The "Granny Robber" has pleaded guilty to bank robbery. Accompanied by her husband, family and friends, Barbara Joly was sentenced by Butler County Judge Michael Sage to three years in prison.

Joly did apologize for her actions, actions that translated to four bank robberies, where she apparently stole money for her son. Her son was in court today to stand by his mother. [...]

She has already pleaded guilty to three counts of bank robbery in Warren County. Joly will be sentenced next week for those crimes and could face up to 15 years in prison.

Judge James Flannery has already promised that Joly will be sentenced to prison time in Warren County and it will be imposed consecutively.

Grandma Pinched for Bank Robbery

(Franklin, Ohio) Sixty-eight-year-old Barbara Joly, aka 'Granny Bandit,' has been arrested for allegedly robbing several banks. Investigators suspect Joly robbed banks in Franklin, Lebanon and Mason.

Franklin police responded to a robbery at Huntington Bank, on the 300 block of south Main Street just after 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Joly, 68, was found a short distance from the scene in her vehicle, and taken into custody, police said. Evidence in her vehicle linked her to the scene.

Notably, no weapons are believed to be involved with the robberies. Joly was booked into custody at the Warren County Jail.
