Go-to-Jail Pot Law

(Medina, OH) Marijuana users should avoid Medina. According to a city ordinance, any person caught possessing the drug will face a mandatory three days in jail. The law also provides for a fine of up to $1,000 and classifies the crime as a first-degree misdemeanor which is comparable in severity to domestic violence. As such, offenders will have a criminal record for the rest of their lives.

Until recently, the law wasn't being enforced due to a court challenge that it was unconstitutional. However, last Wednesday the 9th Ohio District Court of Appeals ruled that the city of Medina has the right to adopt local laws to address local problems.

The defense lawyers will ask the Ohio Supreme Court to review the case. In the meantime, all Ohio dope smokers that can read a map are urged to put a big red "X" on Medina when planning their itineraries.
