Margaret de Barraicua Pleads Guilty

(Sacramento, California) Here's the latest news on 30-year-old McClatchy High School teacher Margaret de Barraicua. As you may recall, last February, police caught and arrested de Barraicua for boffing a 16-year-old student in her car while her two-year-old child was strapped in the back seat. She was initially charged with four counts of rape.

Yesterday in the Sacramento County Superior Court, de Barraicua pleaded guilty to four counts of unlawful sex with a minor as part of a plea agreement with the court. Although they went along with it, the prosecutors wanted something different in the plea. According to Deputy District Attorney Rochelle Hao, "The people's offer was different. This is the court's offer." Nevertheless, de Barraicua is scheduled to return to court on November 18. She faces a maximum of 16 months in prison.

Given that the victim in the case was a special education student and de Barraicua likely used her authority to engage in repeated sex, 16 months seems lenient. Switch circumstances around and make it a 30-year-old male teacher having repeated sex with a 16-year-old female special education student. Would 16 months be acceptable?

[Update 11/19/05]

De Barraicua sentenced.
