Female Teacher Gets 4 1/2 Years for Sex Abuse

(Augusta County, Virginia) Last July, 49-year-old former music teacher at Beverley Manor Middle School, Shelby Sue Shelton, was arrested and charged for having sex on multiple occasions with a former female student.

In January, Shelton was found guilty of sexually abusing the young teen girl on at least 100 occasions. Specifically, Shelton was convicted of two counts of having carnal knowledge of a child and two counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.

On Friday, almost a year after she was arrested, Augusta County Judge Thomas H. Wood sentenced Shelton to five years in prison on each of the four felony counts. Judge Thomas then suspended 15 and one-half years of her twenty-year sentence.

Consequently, Shelton will be behind bars for no more than four and one-half years. With good behavior, she probably won't even see that.
