(Cassopolis, Michigan) A 28-year-old married mother of four, Stacy Jeannette Filbert, pleaded guilty earlier this month to criminal sexual conduct for having a sexual affair with a 15-year-old boy. Yesterday, Filbert was sentenced to one year in jail, suspended.
"This defendant appears to be in a perpetual state of immaturity," Cass County Prosecuting Attorney Victor Fitz told a judge during Filbert’s sentencing hearing.Filbert's attorney, James Miller, said she is trying to get her life in order. To illustrate, she just got her GED.
Fitz said Filbert, who is 28, has four children, who are in foster care.
In April, she took in the runaway teen, who court officials said was not blameless in the affair.
Circuit Judge Michael Dodge also gave Filbert three years' probation.
Frankly, I'm perplexed that court officials place blame on the boy. Unless Michigan has special laws divvying up responsibility for sexual crimes, it doesn't make sense. And the boy can't be blamed because Filbert is immature, I don't think. The "court officials" should explain themselves.
[Update 08/26/07]
Filbert violates regular probation. Sentenced to super-duper probation.
