Gays at the Olympics

According to this report, there are only 10 openly homosexual athletes among 10,708 competing in the 2008 Olympics. They include three Germans, two Norwegians, two Australians, two Americans and a Swede. All but one are women.

Arguably, the less than 0.1 percent of athletes in the Olympics who are gay extrapolated to reflect gay people in society would indicate that the percentage of homosexuals in the overall population is statistically insignificant. This clearly contrasts with the image projected by the media and the entertainment industry which continuously pound the public with the impression that homosexuals comprise a substantial segment of the population.

Of course, estimating the percentage of gays in society from the percentage of Olympians who are gay could well be flawed. It might be that trim, toned and muscular young athletes are less likely to be oriented toward homosexuality than the general public.
