(Aiken County, South Carolina) Stephanie Kirkland has been cleared of all charges.
According to this report, the 13-year-old girl came forward and admitted that she made up the whole sexual assault story. Because of some perceived wrong, the 13-year-old retaliated against Kirkland by falsely accusing her of a serious crime.
Although Kirkland has been cleared, there have been consequences to her mental well-being and her reputation.
Kirkland spent the night in jail, but that wasn't the worst of it.Unfortunately, the justice system is forced to walk a thin line in trying to protect children and, therefore, will occasionally jail and charge people with sex crimes after being presented with uncorroborated allegations. Sadly, sometimes the accused becomes the victim.
"Handcuffs and shackles, walking in front of my family," she says. "I mean I lost 9 pounds, I couldn't eat for a week."
In the days following her arrest, Kirkland's case hit the media on TV, in the newspaper and online. Comments from complete strangers started to flood Kirkland's Myspace page.
"Saying that they wanna do sexual things to me because of something I did to a little girl, that I didn't do. That's not fair," she says.
