UN Mobilizes to Save Chimps

Mount Nyamulagira

(Democratic Republic of the Congo) One of two active volcanoes inside Virunga National Park, Nyamulagira, started erupting on January 2nd, placing 40 eastern chimpanzees in jeopardy. Fortunately, a United Nations multinational team sent airplanes and helicopters to the Congolese conservation authorities to help save the chimps.

Virunga Chief Warden Innocent Mburanumwe confirmed that the chimps have so far escaped the flowing lava.
