(San Francisco, California) A 50-year-old German tourist, Mechthild Schroeer, was killed early Sunday after being caught in a crossfire between two rival groups of gunmen. The gunfire reportedly is part of a wave of nightclub-related violence plaguing the city.
Mechthild and her husband Stefan had checked in to the St. George Hotel only hours before. The trip was to be a celebration of the couple's wedding anniversary.
The woman died of her injuries at a California hospital. Two other people were injured.Mayor Gavin Newsom expressed condolences while anti-gun activists from California to Germany began voicing full-throated outrage.
On Monday night police said they had charged 18-year-old Phillip Steward with murder.
