California Mom Accused of Killing Infant Son

(Alameda County, California) A 23-year-old local woman, Ashley Renee Newton, has been accused of murder after she allegedly stabbed her 7-month-old son to death.

Newton drove to Del Valle Regional Park and apparently ran her Honda Civic into various objects before abandoning the car near the dead-end of Arroyo Road in front of Camp Arroyo about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Chief Timothy Anderson of the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department.

Officers, responding to reports of the crash, found the car with its engine running and damage to its front and back ends, but no one was found inside. An empty child seat was in the car, Anderson said.[…]

Shortly after noon, while preparing to tow the Honda, officers spotted Newton walking with a baby in her arms. Police realized that the baby wasn't moving, and officers, including off-duty Livermore Police Chief Michael Harris, immediately performed CPR, Anderson said. But paramedics pronounced the infant dead from stab wounds, authorities said.

"Officers arrested the woman after she made statements implicating herself as being responsible for stabbing the baby," Anderson said.
