Georgia Teacher Accused of Child Cruelty

(Newton County, Georgia) A healthcare science and biotech teacher at Social Circle High School, Julie Johnson, has been arrested on charges of cruelty to children.

Julie Johnson along with Michael Johnson have been charged with second-degree cruelty to children.
According to a sheriff's spokesperson, two children - ages 7 and 8 -- were removed from the home.

Johnson was a teacher at Social Circle High School. Tuesday afternoon, Social Circle City Schools superintendent Dr. Todd McGhee told 11Alive's Blayne Alexander that Johnson resigned her position as the high school's healthcare science and biotech teacher. He said the resignation was effective May 9, the day after her arrest.

The superintendent said Johnson was named teacher of the year at the high school last year.
