Georgia Woman Gets Prison for Driving Over Her Child
(Houston County, Georgia) Yesterday, 26-year-old local woman Arkebia Albury was sentenced to nine years in prison for running over her child as she fled a mall in Centerville after she was accused of shoplifting.
Her sentence, handed down by Houston County Superior Court Judge George Nunn, was based on convictions for serious injury by vehicle and failure to stop and return to the scene of an accident.Albury was also ordered to serve 11 years of probation.
Her son, who was 4-years-old at the time, suffered skull fractures, a lacerated liver and other injuries in the May 23, 2013 incident, the release stated.
According to the release, Albury fled the Houston County Galleria after attempts to detain her for shoplifting failed. She neglected to place her son in her vehicle and thought he had climbed inside. As she fled the scene, she struck her son with her 2001 Toyota Camry and ran over him.
She then placed the injured boy inside the car and fled the scene. She was pulled over a few miles away by Centerville police. The boy was taken to the Houston County Medical Center.
