Illegal Alien Charged with Manslaughter

(Los Angeles, California) A 24-year-old Mexican national, Hector Velazquez-Nava, has been charged with vehicular manslaughter for driving drunk and causing a crash which resulted in the deaths of two people.

On Wednesday, Velazquez-Nava allegedly steered his sport utility vehicle into the wrong lane of Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades, striking the sedan of filmmaker Bob Clark, 67, head-on. Both the filmmaker and his son, 22-year-old Ariel Hanrath-Clark, died.

Velazquez-Nava was booked into the LA County Jail with bail set at $100,000. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has placed a deportation hold on Velazquez-Nava awaiting adjudication of local charges.

Bob Clark was influential in the film community. He directed "A Christmas Story" and was involved in the "Porky's" series of films as writer, director and producer.

One question that needs to be answered is whether Velazquez-Nava had been arrested before. If so, someone may have to do some 'splainin' why he wasn't deported.

[Update 10/13/07]

In August, Velazquez-Nava pleaded no contest to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Yesterday, Hector Velazquez-Nava was sentenced to six years in prison.
