(South Bend, Indiana) In May 2005, former aide at Greene Intermediate Center, Schmeca White, 27, was arrested on felony charges of inappropriate sexual activities with special education students between the ages of 11 and 15.
Specific charges included two counts each of child molestation and sexual misconduct with a minor, along with sexual battery, criminal deviate conduct, and battery.
Last week, White's trial concluded with convictions on three of eight charges she faced.
From WNDU.com:
All the charges filed against Schemeca White were serious charges, felony charges, and these three convictions are enough to land her a maximum sentence of 19-years behind bars.White's sentencing has been scheduled for October 25.
What happened to Schemeca White in the courtroom was somewhat of a comfort to those who had children in her classroom. Debra Walker, mother of a victim said, "I was a little disappointed, but justice have been served. So I'm okay," with it.
Although jurors returned more verdicts of not guilty than guilty in general, they believed the testimony of six special education students who talked about the unbelievable things going on at the school.
Deputy Prosecutor Liz Hurley stated, "She was convicted of vicarious sexual gratification, which means she directed students to perform sexual acts with each other in the classroom. She was convicted of battery to a child under fourteen for choking a student."
[Update 10/26/06]
