A Message From The Boss

To All My Valued Employees:

There have been some rumblings around the office about the future of this company, and more specifically, your job. As you know, the economy has changed for the worse and presents many challenges. However, the good news is this: The economy doesn't pose a threat to your job. What does threaten your job however, is the changing political landscape in this country.

However, let me tell you some little tidbits of fact which might help you decide what is in your best interests. First, while it is easy to spew rhetoric that casts employers against employees, you have to understand that for every business owner there is a Back Story. This back story is often neglected and overshadowed by what you see and hear. Sure, you see me park my Mercedes outside. You've seen my big home at last year's Christmas party. I'm sure; all these flashy icons of luxury conjure up some idealized thoughts about my life.

However, what you don't see is the BACK STORY: I started this company 28 years ago. At that time, I lived in a 300 square foot studio apartment for 3 years. My entire living apartment was converted into an office so I could put forth 100% effort into building a company, which by the way, would eventually employ you. My diet consisted of Ramen Pride noodles because every dollar I spent went back into this company. I drove a rusty Toyota Corolla with a defective transmission. I didn't have time to date.

Often times, I stayed home on weekends, while my friends went out drinking and partying. In fact, I was married to my business -- hard work, discipline, and sacrifice. Meanwhile, my friends got jobs. They worked 40 hours a week and made a modest $50K a year and spent every dime they earned. They drove flashy cars and lived in expensive homes and wore fancy designer clothes. Instead of hitting the Nordstrom's for the latest hot fashion item, I was trolling through the discount store extracting any clothing item that didn't look like it was birthed in the 70's. My friends refinanced their mortgages and lived a life of luxury.

I, however, did not. I put my time, my money, and my life into a business with a vision that eventually, some day, I too, will be able to afford these luxuries my friends supposedly had. So, while you physically arrive at the office at 9am, mentally check in at about noon, and then leave at 5pm, I don't. There is no "off" button for me. When you leave the office, you are done and you have a weekend all to yourself. I unfortunately do not have the freedom. I eat, and breathe this company every minute of the day. There is no rest. There is no weekend. There is no happy hour. Every day this business is attached to my hip like a 1 year old special-needs child.

You, of course, only see the fruits of that garden -- the nice house, the Mercedes, the vacations... you never realize the Back Story and the sacrifices I've made.

Now, the economy is falling apart and I, the guy that made all the right decisions and saved his money, have to bail-out all the people who didn't. The people that overspent their paychecks suddenly feel entitled to the same luxuries that I earned and sacrificed a decade of my life for. Yes, business ownership has is benefits but the price I've paid is steep and not without wounds.

Unfortunately, the cost of running this business, and employing you, is starting to eclipse the threshold of marginal benefit and let me tell you why: I am being taxed to death and the government thinks I don't pay enough. I have state taxes. Federal taxes. Property taxes. Sales and use taxes. Payroll taxes. Workers compensation taxes. Unemployment taxes. Taxes on taxes. I have to hire a tax man to manage all these taxes and then guess what? I have to pay taxes for employing him. Government mandates and regulations and all the accounting that goes with it, now occupy most of my time.

On Oct 15th, I wrote a check to the US Treasury for $288,000 for quarterly taxes. You know what my "stimulus" check was? Zero.. Nada. Zilch.

The question I have is this: Who is stimulating the economy? Me, the guy who has provided 14 people good paying jobs and serves over 2,200,000 people per year with a flourishing business? Or, the single mother sitting at home pregnant with her fourth child waiting for her next welfare check? Obviously, government feels the latter is the economic stimulus of this country.

The fact is, if I deducted (Read: Stole) 50% of your paycheck you'd quit and you wouldn't work here. I mean, why should you? That's nuts. Who wants to get rewarded only 50% of their hard work? Well, I agree which is why your job is in jeopardy.

Here is what many of you don't understand ... to stimulate the economy you need to stimulate what runs the economy. Had suddenly government mandated to me that I didn't need to pay taxes, guess what? Instead of depositing that $288,000 into the Washington black-hole, I would have spent it, hired more employees, and generated substantial economic growth. My employees would have enjoyed the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and better salaries. But you can forget it now.

When you have a comatose man on the verge of death, you don't defibrillate and shock his thumb thinking that will bring him back to life, do you? Or, do you defibrillate his heart? Business is at the heart of America and always has been. To restart it, you must stimulate it, not kill it. Suddenly, the power brokers in Washington believe the poor of America are the essential drivers of the American economic engine. Nothing could be further from the truth and this is the type of change you can keep.

So where am I going with all this? It's quite simple. If any new taxes are levied on me, or my company, my reaction will be swift and simple. I'll fire you. I'll fire your co-workers. You can then plead with the government to pay for your mortgage, your SUV, and your child's future. Frankly, it isn't my problem any more.

Then, I will close this company down, move to another country, and retire. You see, I'm done. I'm done with a country that penalizes the productive and gives to the unproductive. My motivation to work and to provide jobs will be destroyed, and with it, will be my citizenship. So, if you lose your job, it won't be at the hands of the economy; it will be at the hands of a political hurricane that swept through this country, steamrolled the constitution, and will have changed its landscape forever. If that happens, you can find me sitting on a beach, retired, and with no employees to worry about....

Signed, THE BOSS

Tehran Mass Protest - June 20

The number of people is huge and I see no evidence of violence. In fact, it's arguably more orderly than Bourbon Street on Fat Tuesday.
Tribute to Khomeini?

From earlier today from Tehran:
“Minutes ago, a terrorist detonated his explosive vest in the Imam Khomeini shrine. The blast caused damage in one section of the shrine,” Iran’s deputy police chief for operations, Hossein Sajedinia, was quoted as saying by Mehr [news agency].
Blame hasn't been clearly attached. However, it's reasonable to doubt that the pro-democracy activists were involved.
Cape Cod Woman Accused of Rape of Child

(Barnstable, Massachusetts) A 26-year-old Cape Cod resident, Carolyn A. Pierce, has been arrested for allegedly raping a child repeatedly over the last two weeks. The child reportedly was being cared for by Pierce.

Pierce faces charges of multiple counts of rape of a child by force and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14.

Pierce was booked into custody at the Barnstable County House of Corrections without bail.

[Update 6/23/09]

Carolyn Pierce appeared in Orleans District Court yesterday for arraignment and pleaded not guilty to the charges against her. According to Assistant District Attorney Michael Donovan, Pierce was a friend of the victim's family.
Pierce cared for the victim, in the victim’s family home in Dennis, five times between June 9 and June 16, according to the statements in court. After the most recent time Pierce baby-sat, the victim’s mother took the child to The Children’s Cove, a child advocacy center, for an examination after noticing some physical symptoms.

Following the examination, Dennis police were called to investigate.

They interviewed Pierce on June 19. Donovan said that Pierce admitted to police that on the five days she watched the child, she touched her in a sexual way. She allegedly admitted inserting a finger into the little girl’s vagina. “She didn’t know why she did it,” Donovan said Pierce told police.
Bond was set at $25,000.

Tip: Lame
Invasion of privacy reaches new heights

This must be the work of some idiot who does not know what he is doing:
"If you're planning to apply for a job with the city of Bozeman, Montana, be prepared to hand over much more than your references and résumé. The Rocky Mountain city instructs all job applicants to divulge their usernames and passwords for "any Internet-based chat rooms, social clubs or forums, to include, but not limited to: Facebook, Google, Yahoo, YouTube.com, MySpace, etc."

"Before we offer people employment in a public trust position we have a responsibility to do a thorough background check," Chuck Winn, Bozeman's assistant city manager, told CBSNews.com in an interview on Thursday. "This is just a component of a thorough background check."

"Shame on us if there was information out there available about a person who applied for a job who was a child molester or had some sort of information out there on the Internet that kind of showed those propensities and we didn't look for it, we didn't ask, and we hired that person," Winn said. "In many ways we would have let the public down."

After CBS affiliate KBZK highlighted the requirement on Wednesday, a firestorm of sorts has erupted online: irate e-mail messages have jammed mailboxes in City Hall, snarky Twitter.com comments have poked fun at a place once awarded the sobriquet of "All-America City," and a poll indicates 98 percent of respondents believe the city's policy amounts to an "invasion of privacy." ...

Under the policy, which the city says has been in place for a few years, a police officer logs into and reviews the social networking sites of people applying for public safety (that is, police and fire) jobs. For other jobs, the city's human resources department will perform the investigation.

An attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital rights group based in San Francisco, questioned Bozeman's choice to ask for usernames and passwords. "I think its indefensibly invasive and likely illegal as a violation of the First Amendment rights of job applicants," said Kevin Bankston, an EFF attorney. "Essentially they're conditioning your application for employment on your waiving your First Amendment rights ... and risking the security of your information by requiring you to share your password with them... Where does it stop? How about a photocopy of your diary?"

Another possible hitch: Some social networking sites flatly prohibit disclosure of passwords, so a job seeker who complied with Bozeman's request could lose his account. Facebook's terms of service, for instance, say: "You will not share your password (or) let anyone else access your account."

Smoking Dope Causes Cancer

(San Francisco, California) Based upon a review of more than 30 scientific papers, the state Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment announced yesterday that smoking marijuana causes cancer, making it the same as smoking tobacco with regard to health effects.

Therefore, marijuana businesses with more than 10 employees will have to post warning signs telling everyone of the danger.

It's noteworthy that a British study found a direct link between smoking marijuana and psychotic illnesses such as delusions and hallucinations, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, neuroses and suicidal tendencies.

Therefore, according to the sources, smoking marijuana not only causes people to get cancer but it also makes them crazy. The California Environmental Health Hazard Assessment agency might want to consider also including mention of the the potential for psychotic illnesses on the marijuana warning signs.

Idaho Teacher Gets 180 Days in Jail in Sex Case - Updated

(Boise, Idaho) For conviction on one count of sexual battery of a minor, former Borah High School teacher Michelle Farley was sentenced by Fourth District Court Judge Timothy Hansen to 180 days in jail along with a suspended 10-year prison term. Farley will be on probation during the 10-year term of suspension.
The married mother of two initially denied the allegations and tried to paint the victim as a liar. Farley later admitted developing a crush on the teen, buying him gifts and bringing him to her home to engage in sex on numerous occasions between May and October of 2008.
Judge Hansen also barred Farley from having any contact with male juveniles while on probation and ordered her to complete sex offender treatment. She also was ordered to register as a sex offender in the state of Idaho.

Idaho Teacher Arrested for Sex with Student
[Previous 12/19/08 post]
(Boise, Idaho) A 40-year-old psychology teacher at Borah High School, Michelle Ward Farley, was arrested yesterday for allegedly engaging in sex with a 17-year-old male student. Farley faces two counts of sexual battery.
Boise police were contacted early Thursday by someone reporting a possible pattern of sexual contact between Farley and a teenage male that began in May 2008. Detectives investigating the report found evidence of a crime and arrested Farley by 8:30 p.m.

Ada County Deputy Prosecutor Jean Fisher said Farley admitted to Boise police when she was arrested Thursday to having had sexual contact with the boy.
Farley was booked into custody at the Ada County Jail with bond set at $10,000.
Pakistani Accused of Sham Marriage

(Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) A 28-year-old Pakistani national, Tahir Masud, is accused of paying $5,000 for an American woman to marry him so that he could become a legal immigrant. Federal agents arrested Masud yesterday.

Jessica Lynn Smith married Masud but was not charged with any offense.

I give up. Why wasn't Smith also charged? Masud and Smith conspired together to scam the system and they should be held equally responsible.
Proposed Ban of Burqa in Public

(Paris, France) Sacre bleu! According to French government spokesman, Luc Chatel:
The government would seek to set up a parliamentary commission that could propose legislation aimed at barring Muslim women from wearing the burqa and other fully covering gowns outside the home.

“If we find that use of the burqa was very clearly imposed (on women) ... we would draw the appropriate conclusions,” Chatel said. Asked whether that could mean legislation banning the burqa in France, he responded “why not?”

In France, the terms “burqa” and “niqab” often are used interchangeably. The former refers to a full-body covering worn largely in Afghanistan with only a mesh screen over the eyes, whereas the latter is a full-body veil, often in black.

Chatel’s comments have helped revive debate about whether wear of Islamic garments is appropriate in France, a country with a long and proud secular tradition.
I suggest that the proposal will be met with vigorous rebuttal, including sharp objections by Muslim leaders and thousands of cars torched by mysterious, unidentifiable youths.

Companion post at The Jawa Report.
As Obama prints billions of greenbacks, the smarties are moving into Swiss francs

The more he prints, the less value each one has. Sad when a small Alpine country is more trusted than the mightiest power on earth. But it is really bugging out the Swiss. They are printing more Francs to cope with the demand but the excessively high value being placed on their currency is still distorting their trade with other countries

THE Swiss franc has weakened sharply against other currencies, hours after the Swiss National Bank said it would intervene to stop an irrational rise in the franc against the euro. The SNB had no comment on the move, saying they already issued a statement after a policy meeting at which the central bank kept interest rates stable at 0.25 per cent.

However, currency analysts suspect it was an intervention, as the SNB likely acted to prove their resolve when the euro actually crept lower despite an early warning statement. The Bank for International Settlements, which traders say would have been the one to sell Swiss francs on behalf of the SNB, also declined to comment.

The franc's sharp move comes as the SNB has promised to fight the risks of deflation and shrinking economic growth, made worse by a strong currency, which also puts the price of their exports at a disadvantage. Investors have been flocking to the franc because it is considered a safe haven amid the global financial crisis....

"I think what we are seeing is a real battle," said Simon Derrick, a currency analyst at the Bank of New York Mellon. "For the past three months, the SNB has been fighting a losing battle with verbal intervention. Every time they have commented on the strength of the Swiss franc, the market has taken less and less notice.” ...

The SNB last officially intervened in the currency markets in March, when it sold the Swiss franc to push the euro up from the SwFr1.48 area to over SwFr1.53. The aim of the SNB's purchases of foreign currencies was to prevent an appreciation of the Swiss franc against the euro, in its role as a save-haven currency, SNB's Mr Jordan said.

Must not address a senator as 'Ma'am'

A pathetic little Leftist ego again:
"In case you forgot, Barbara Boxer is a senator. The feisty California lawmaker felt the need to remind an Army brigadier general of that fact Tuesday during a hearing before her Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, where the military officer testifying had the apparent gall to call Boxer "ma'am."

Brig. Gen. Michael Walsh, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was testifying on the Louisiana coastal restoration process in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He began to answer one of Boxer's questions with "ma'am" when Boxer immediately cut him off.

"You know, do me a favor," an irritated Boxer said. "Could say 'senator' instead of 'ma'am?'" "Yes, ma'am," Walsh interjected.

"It's just a thing, I worked so hard to get that title, so I'd appreciate it, yes, thank you," she said. "Yes, senator," he responded.

However, Walsh surely meant no disrespect, as military protocol advises that officers may use "sir" or "ma'am" when addressing anybody higher than them on the chain of command.

Tuesday's hearing was hardly the first time a military officer used those terms during sworn testimony. The same day at a Senate Armed Services subcommittee hearing, two Navy officials repeatedly referred to Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., with the title, "sir." "Yes, sir," Navy Vice Adm. Bernard McCullough said when answering questions. Wicker raised no objections.

Video of Boxer's tirade here

If you ask me, one Brigadier general is worth 50 senators. The respect should have flowed the other way. But we know what Leftists think of the military. Their various bans on the ROTC and military recruiting are evidence enough of that. Leftists are such egotists that they think anyone must be stupid who volunteers to risk his life for the safety of his country.

Massachusetts Woman Accused of Child Rape

(Boston, Massachusetts) A 45-year-old area woman, Linda M. Mayotte, has been accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old boy.

Mayotte faces charges of statutory child rape, indecent assault and battery on a child under age 14, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Prosecutors said Mayotte, a married mother of three, had a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old boy from February to June 2005. The charges recently came to light when the boy was questioned about a theft. After a two week investigation, police arrested Mayotte at her home where the incidents allegedly occurred.

Prosecutors said Mayotte's two adopted children and a 16-month-old have been placed with the Department of Children and Families.
Mayotte has been booked into custody with bond set at $2,500. A court appearance has been scheduled for July 1.

[Update] Linda Mayotte's husband, Joseph, has also been arrested and faces similar charges as his wife. Joseph Mayotte was booked into custody with bail set at $25,000.
Arkansas Teacher Gets Jail in Sex Case - Updated

(Bentonville, Arkansas) Former Bentonville High School teacher Melissa Gayle Monroe, 33, pleaded guilty yesterday to felony sexual assault and misdemeanor furnishing alcohol to a minor stemming from engaging in a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student in early 2008.
Monroe admitted to having intercourse with the man at her home on his 18th birthday in late January. A couple weeks later she sent another teacher a text confessing her crime, according to a probable cause affidavit.

She told the student he could not come over when he asked, but, eventually, she allowed his visit and they had sex three times, the affidavit states.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Joni Rose said Monroe would not be allowed to teach again.
Benton County Circuit Judge David Clinger sentenced Monroe to 120 days in jail and five years of probation. She was also ordered to register as a sex offender and pay fines and costs totaling $1,670.

Monroe was directed to report to jail on August 23.

Arkansas Teacher Accused of Sex with Male Student
[Previous 2/19/08 post]
(Bentonville, Arkansas) A 32-year-old math teacher at Bentonville High School, Melissa G. Monroe, was arrested earlier today for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a male student.

Monroe has been charged with second-degree sexual assault and knowingly furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Bentonville Police started investigating after receiving "information" that Monroe was sexually involved with a male student.

Monroe was booked into custody at the Benton County Jail. She awaits a bond hearing.

[Update 03/12/08]

From NWANews.com:
Monroe, who taught math in the Bentonville School District for seven years, was sent a certified letter Feb. 20 notifying her of the termination from her position, Superintendent Gary Compton said Monday night.

The Bentonville School Board gave its official approval to the action at the end of its meeting Monday. Monroe has 30 calendar days to appeal her termination, Compton said. When she was arrested, she was placed on suspension with pay.
Monroe was released on $5,000 bail after booking. Her arraignment is scheduled for March 31.

The Little Turtle Meets Animal Lovers

(Guangdong, China) Featured during the 2nd Annual Sea Life Ceremony at the Fumen Ocean Museum was the release of captured fish, shrimp and turtles to live free in the ocean. Once liberated, the marine creatures all swam for deep water. Well, almost all.
There was one small sea turtle which could not figure out which way to go. Each time it was taken to several dozen meters into the ocean and released, it turned around immediately and turned back to land. When it hit the beach, it wandered around aimlessly.

After several failures, the worker scrutinized the turtle carefully and found that it was normal except for a scratch on one leg. "Maybe it wants people to treat the leg before it leaves?" The workers speculated.

So they tried to throw the turtle into deeper waters. This time, the little turtle vanished from the sight of the spectators.
This incident illustrates one of the erroneous beliefs of animal lovers. That is, all too often they attribute human intellect and emotions to an animal with a tiny brain. In this case, a worker assumes that the turtle knows that medical care is available on land and therefore it refused to go into the ocean.

Nonetheless, upon consideration that the turtle needed medical attention, the workers decided to toss it into deeper water and it disappeared. Now, a snarky observer might opine that the incident is typical of a government-run health care system. A patient comes out of the water in need of health care and the system throws him into deeper water.

Heh, and there's more. It seems that the consensus is that the subject turtle was a Burmese land turtle and Burmese land turtles cannot swim. Therefore, it's quite understandable why the turtle kept coming out of the water. Unfortunately, emotional fervor prompted the animal lovers to do good, despite relevant facts, and they tossed the little turtle in deep water where it likely drowned.
Three Banks Robbed in 35 Minutes

(Akron, Ohio) A black female bank robber is being sought by police for allegedly robbing three banks within a 35-minute period on Monday. She's around five-foot tall, late 20s or early 30s, and weighs 110 to 120 pounds.

A getaway maroon Taurus driven by a black male is believed involved. The FBI is offering a reward.

Completing transactions at three banks in 35 minutes is phenomenal. My guess is that the woman may have been medicated to move fast.
Dress Code Mandates Underwear and Deodorant

(Brooksville, Florida) The local city council has passed a revised dress code which specifies that city employees must wear underwear and use deodorant and repeated infraction could result in termination of employment.
The new dress policy instructs employees to observe "strict personal hygiene," to include deodorants.

It also bans employees from coming to work with clothes emblazoned with foul language, nude or semi-nude pictures and messages that promote drug use.

Halter tops and revealing, "sexually provocative," garments are out. The same goes for piercings beyond the ear. Cuts and wounds must be covered.

Then there's this, under the "unacceptable attire" category: "The observable lack of undergarments and exposed undergarments."
This is nit-picking. It should be sufficient to instruct all employees to present a professional demeanor and let managers and supervisors be responsible for their people.

However, the dress code is a done deal so apparently the city bureaucracy will have to empower dress code enforcers to assure compliance.
As an aside, this reminds me of my USNavy experience when Petty Officers were occasionally stationed outside the entrance to the base exchange to check sailors' haircuts. The shaggy-haired got written up and had to answer to their chain of command.
On a different note, women displaying an "observable lack of undergarments" would appear to include those without evidence that bras and panties are being worn. As such, the city of Brooksville seems to have mandated that panty lines be visible or a thong must be worn and capable of being verified.

Nevertheless, if an employee decides to go commando, there is probably no way for the observable undergarment police to know unless that person says, "Hey, I'm going commando." On the other hand, I could be wrong and Brooksville authorities may decide to conduct snap observable undergarment inspections.

I contend that the Brooksville dress code is largely unenforceable.
Blowing kisses incorrect in Maine?

We read:
"Justin Denney's family watched on as he ascended the Cumberland County Civic Center stage during graduation Friday night to accept his diploma, but the superintendent told him to return to his seat.

The Bonny Eagle High School senior's mother wants an apology, and her son wants his diploma. "It's all I can think of now," Justin Denney said. "Why did that happen. What just happened?"

Mary Denney said she can't believe how her son's taking a bow and blowing a kiss on stage was grounds for the superintendent to withhold his diploma. "I'm like, 'Did she not hand him his diploma?' I'm like, 'What's going on?'" Mary Denney said.

She said she and Justin both signed a code of conduct regarding the graduation when she picked up graduation tickets on Friday, but she doesn't think he violated it. "There was no misbehavior. Showboating is not misbehavior," Mary Denney said. "A bow, a kiss to your mom is not misbehavior. There was no need of my son not getting his diploma."

Before the school began handing out diplomas, some students pulled out beach balls. One student was forced to sit away from his classmates with staff while police escorted another student behind the stage. "No arrests were made. The individual that was escorted off the stage was asked to leave the civic center.

The deputy returned to the crowd and took another beach ball away from the students, but Mary Denney said School Area District 6 Superintendent Suzanne Lukas was still upset. "When she got up there and started speaking, they threw out a couple more balls and she turned around and said, 'More people may not be graduating today if this continues,'" Mary Denney said.

While in his seat or waiting in line for his diploma, Justin Denney never touched a beach ball. After his name was called, he took a bow, blew a kiss to and pointed to his family and he pulled out a necklace made for him after he won a state track final, but he didn't get his diploma, leaving a whole family in disbelief.

The crowd booed, but Justin Denney still doesn't have his diploma. Now, his mother wants her son to get what he's worked so hard for.

Source

The misbehavior by other students was obviously stupid and wrong and was properly punished but to classify blowing kisses as misbehavior is surely strange. The lad was just thanking his parents. I am sure a lot of parents wish their children were more thankful. The superintendent was obviously under stress at the time but now that she has had time for reflection she should apologize for her wrong call and do her best to make amends.
