Arrests in Russian Gay March

(St. Petersburg, Russia) From a report dated yesterday.
LGBT activists in Russia confirm that police have arrested about 60 participants in today’s gay pride parade for violating the country's anti-gay laws, while some were beaten and suffered injuries.

All the participants in today’s St Petersburg gay pride parade have been arrested and are being detained in police vans.

Some participants were badly beaten by anti-gay protestors.
The anti-gay laws were passed to protect minors from homosexual propaganda.
Must not question Leftist journalists?

I have put up below a bigger excerpt of an article than I normally would because the argument it presents does depend on detail.  The author, Paul McGeough, a senior journalist on a major Left-leaning paper, is defending Glenn Greenwald.

Greenwald is a Leftist journalist with whom I sometimes agree.  He does defend the individual rather well on some occasions.  He has become particularly prominent for his revelations about  domestic spying by Uncle Sam. Conservative opinion is split over whether those revelations are a good thing or not.

Some people who disapprove of Greenwald have "dug dirt" on him -- published revelations about Greenwald's past that are a bit dubious.  In my view Greenwald has replied to that "dirt" effectively, but McGeough wants to add to that defence.

But his argument is ludicrous.  He portrays the oppression practiced by the Islamist regime in Turkey as being the same as the attacks on Greenwald.  A few journalists questioning the past of another journalist is equivalent to riot suppression by an authoritarian government?  McGeough is in fact attacking freedom of speech about other journalists.  He is the one attempting to suppress speech, not Uncle Sam

What we have seen by way of press freedom in Turkey is what separates the unenlightened from the civilised. Sad to report, what we've seen by way of press freedom in the US this week is not so far removed - save perhaps for the manner of execution. In the States, shooting the messenger is more Wall Street-esque than it is Mafia-like.

First, Turkey. Proof that the Turkish media is cowed is obvious in a collective decision to virtually ignore anti-government protests raging for the past month — and the savagery of their dispersal by security forces. As Taksim Square erupted in the most fierce challenge to Erdogan in his 10 years in office, CNNTurk pressed on, fearlessly staying with its scheduled program — a penguin documentary.

Now, the US. The objective is the same, but the manner of delivery is, ah, somewhat finessed.

Take the treatment of The Guardian's Glenn Greenwald, the journalist behind sensational leaks on Washington's classified domestic and international phone and internet surveillance.
Greenwald figured they'd come after him. And then he got the email from the New York Daily News and a call from The New York Times — clearly, someone had been going through the trashcan of his life.

Never mind the enormity of the issues thrown up by the release of the most sensitive classified documents held by the National Security Agency or the drama of Washington's flailing efforts to have foreign governments detain the super leaker Edward Snowden and to return him to the US.

No, the New York papers just had to talk to him about a company in which Greenwald had sold out to his partners all of nine years ago. Among other things, it distributed adult videos. Get that down, now. Key words — "adult videos"; connotations — deviant, kinky, not one of us.

Then there was an unpaid tax liability from the winding up of Greenwald's legal practice, still the subject of negotiations between his lawyers and the IRS. Connotations — tax evasion; perhaps fraud. Oh, and more than a decade back Greenwald defaulted on a student loan — now covered by a payment plan agreement. Connotation — irresponsible, rides on coattails of law-abiding citizens.

Greenwald writes: "I'm 46 years old and, like most people, have lived a complicated and varied life. I didn't manage my life from the age of 18 onwards with the intention of being a Family Values US senator. My personal life, like pretty much everyone's, is complex and somewhat messy."

Proud and all as Americans are of the first amendment, at times like this it can be reduced to a decorative nuisance.

In Turkey, you see Erdogan and his bovver boys coming — they come through the front door. But when it comes to shooting the messenger in the US, they use the backdoor and a silencer … and they find a grubby colleague of the targeted journalist to pull the trigger. Saddest of all is how there's always a media volunteer to act as would-be character and career assassin.

Source

In the end, McGeough is just another anti-American Leftist whiner but a lot of people read his stuff so it would seem to deserve a reply.  And it is always amusing how consistently the Left believe in free speech for Leftists only.

Tennessee Teacher Faces Drug/Gun Charges

(Memphis, Tennessee) A 34-year-old special education teacher at Rivercrest Elementary School, Christy Street, has been arrested for involvement in a marijuana production operation. Her husband, Jeremy Street, 36, and another man, Wesley Spring, 27, were also arrested.

The three face drug and gun charges.
During the search, officers found 21 firearms, assorted ammunition, nearly a pound of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Another gun was recovered from a suspect's vehicle.

Police searched a second home on the 4300-block of Estridge Drive, where officers found four marijuana plants, marijuana growing equipment, surveillance cameras, and more ammunition.
Christy Street was booked into custody at the Shelby County Jail with bond set at $20,000.
Tennessee Woman Accused of Sex with Boy, 13

(New Tazewell, Tennessee) A 43-year-old local woman, Michelle Lynn Cox, has been accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old boy.

Cox faces a charge of aggravated statutory rape.
Cox is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in General Sessions Court in front of Judge Robert Estep. That hearing is set for July 18, according to the warrant.

At the time of the alleged incident, Cox was out on $1,000 bail for a June 7 arrest. The warrant for that arrest lists two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and two counts of purchasing alcohol for minors.
Cox is free on $100,000 bond.
Julia Gillard:  A failed feminist flop and a warning to women in politics

The Australian Labor Party (ruling Leftists) has just switched leaders, dumping Julia Gillard (left above) and installing Kevin Rudd (right above)

Before she is totally forgotten in Australian politics (yesterday?), I thought I might point out an unintended truth in La Gillard's claim that her term in office has made it easier for other women in politics.  She has indeed.  She has shown them what NOT to do.

She didn't even start out well.  She gained power not by winning an election in her own right but by being propped up by turncoat conservative independents.  The voters of the two electorates represented by the said independents voted overwhelmingly AGAINST the Labor party but got Julia anyhow.  So she led what was essentially an illegitimate government.  From the very beginning she was not much of an example of female success.

And what does one make of the fact that Kevvy got nearly double  her poll numbers as soon as he replaced her?  That is about as harsh a reproof as one can get in politics.

What led to her final downfall, however, was her feminism. When half the voters are men, feminist ideas have to be promoted gingerly.  Julia did not do so and her final poll numbers among men were around 20%!

Her first big gaffe was the one that got her most praise at the time.  It was the speech that gave feminists orgasms worldwide, the speech where she condemned Tony Abbott as a misogynist.

Unfortunately for her, however, she gave examples of where she thought the conservative leader had uttered misogynisms, and they were the sort of thing that would cause many men to say: "Hey!  I think that too".  She was in effect  criticizing Abbott for saying that men and women are different.  That may amount to misogyny among feminists but for most people it is just commonsense.  It is even commonsense that is amply backed up by science.  So she got a bit more of the feminist vote (which she mostly had already) but showed herself as a feminist extremist to most other people.  And that is a big "most".  Feminists of Gillard's stripe are still a small and cranky minority.

And then she really blew it with her "blue tie" speech, in which she claimed that her loss of power would lead to Australia being led by men in blue ties to the permanent exclusion of women. Tony Abbott, like many conservatives, often wears a blue tie.

The claim was however never plausible in any way.  The deputy leader of the opposition conservative parties is the very effective Julie Bishop, an unmistakeable female!  And because Australia is a monarchy, the ultimate legal authority in Australia  -- as Gough Whitlam found out to his rage -- is the Governor General, who also happens to be female.  And are we forgetting federal parliamentary conservatives like Jane Prentice, Natasha Griggs, Karen Andrews, Nola Marino etc.?

Julia's little bit of hysteria about her own importance did however have one amusing sequel.  Kevvy embraced it.  He has been wearing blue ties ever since!  It was indeed men in blue ties who took power from her, though not the group she foresaw.

So that speech was the last straw for a lot of men.  Her poll numbers among men dropped off a cliff almost immediately.  Most men give feminism some leeway but hysterical feminism was too much.

And right to the end she was pushing feminism -- setting up a commission of inquiry into how badly treated women are.

So the reasons for her disastrous poll ratings and her ignominious dismissal are clear, and I think they show  that women with leadership aspirations should do as Margaret Thatcher did:  campaign on the rightness of her policies, not on the basis of what she has between her legs.

There is  a rather amusing attempt to vindicate La Flop by one of her advisers, a British Leftist,  John McTernan.  He attributes her downfall to "a brutal and unfair misogynist culture" that we apparently have in Australia.  No mention of her poll numbers or the fact that it was the LEFT who deposed her. Those misogynist Leftists!

He has a point however in saying that she was a good "parliamentary performer".  Her ability not to answer questions was indeed non pareil. She was the queen of bluster instead.  I once saw Tony Abbott ask her the same question three times in a row without him getting an answer on any of those occasions. Verbal fluency she had.  Honesty would have been better.

Louisiana Woman Accused of Sex with Boy

(St. Charles Parish, Louisiana) A 28-year-old local woman, Melissa Bryant, has been accused of engaging in sex with a 15-year-old boy.

Bryant faces counts of carnal knowledge of a juvenile, indecent behavior with a juvenile and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
Bryant was arrested after telling a friend of the sexual encounter between her and the teen, according to Sgt. Dwayne LaGrange, Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Bryant was a family friend of the teen, LaGrange said.

That conversation eventually made its way to the teen’s mother, who contacted police.

LaGrange said detectives questioned Bryant about the alleged crime and gathered enough information to make an arrest.
Bryant was booked into custody at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center.
WV Teacher Sentenced for Child Porn - Update

(Wheeling, West Virginia) Former Wheeling Park Middle School teacher Jennifer Bennett has been sentenced for possessing child pornography.
Judge James Mazzone said that while looking over the case, he kept coming back to the act of receiving these images and Bennett, the adult in the relationship, had repeated opportunities to cease communication and didn't.

Bennett will serve one year of jail time and get one year of supervised probation. She will also be required to register as a sex offender every year for the rest of her life.

Her defense argued for a sentence of supervised probation, and the state agreed. They say Bennett does not have a criminal record and has a dependent mother and two children at home.
Bennett made a statement that she was glad police became involved.

WV Teacher Guilty on Child Porn Charge
[Previous 5/18/13 post]
(Wheeling, West Virginia) A 36-year-old teacher at Wheeling Middle School, Jennifer Bennett, has admitted to trading sexually explicit photos with a student.

Bennett pleaded guilty in Ohio County Circuit Court to possession of child pornography.
West Virginia State Police began investigating Bennett in June 2011 after the mother of one of her former students reported she believed Bennett and the then 16-year-old boy shared an inappropriate relationship.

No criminal evidence was discovered during the initial months of the investigation, but in February 2012, the boy told State Police he and Bennett had been exchanging cell phone pictures of their genitals. Bennett also admitted as much during an interview with investigators. She resigned her teaching position that same month.
Bennett will be sentenced in June.

New Jersey Woman Accused in Death of Girl, 8

(Bridgeton, New Jersey) A 32-year-old local woman, Stephany James, has been accused of sending an 8-year-old girl, Aryonna Watson, to her death by ordering her to cross a dangerous street.

James faces charges of aggravated manslaughter and reckless manslaughter.
The order came after Watson had already made one diagonal crossing of the intersection of Delsea Drive and Sherman Avenue alone to look for James at a Rite Aid pharmacy, Cumberland County Assistant Prosecutor Charles Wettstein said.

James had left Watson alone at a bus stop on a corner of the intersection that was diaganol to the pharmacy with some purchases James made at a nearby ALDI supermarket, Wettstein said. James wanted Watson to return to the corner to stay with the purchases, he said.

Watson never made it across the intersection, which has four lanes for traffic and one center turning lane. She was struck by a car and died three days later.
James is in custody at the Cumberland County Jail with bail set at $200,000.
US-Philippines Conduct Military Exercises

(Manila, Philippines) Beginning yesterday, US and Philippine warships and 1,000 American and Filipino sailors and servicemen have been participating in joint military exercises, due to conclude on July 2.
Ensign Bernard Sabado of Naval Forces Northern Luzon Public Affairs Office said the joint naval exercises dubbed Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) will include live fire drills, maritime interdiction, ship boarding and seizure, as well as aerial surveillance.

“In-port” activities will be conducted in several areas of Northern and Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog, specifically at the former US bases in Subic Bay in Zambales and at Clark Field in Pampanga and at the Philippine Marine training base in Ternate, Cavite.

China has been imposing a three-layered naval and maritime defense around Panatag Shoal since last year, effectively driving away Filipino fishermen from getting closer to fish.
Ominously, ChiCom maritime activities have become increasingly more aggressive, threatening its neighbors. I suggest it's reasonable to expect Chinese neighborhood bullying in the South China Sea to escalate.
Florida Female Crime Ring

(Broward County, Florida)
Authorities are searching for a four-member ring of women who have gone home with men they meet at upscale bars, drug them and then steal from them.

The Broward Sheriff's Office has gotten arrest warrants for Subhanna Beyah, 25, Johnnina Miller, 25, Keshia Clark, 27, and Ryan Elkins, 23. They target men and steal money, guns, jewelry and other valuable items from them, authorities said.
The women face a raft of felony charges. Crimestoppers is offering a reward so be on the lookout.

Idaho Mom Accused of Sex with Boys
[Previous 12/9/12 post]
(Ada County, Idaho) A 35-year-old mother, Courtney Sue Reschke, has been accused of engaging in sex with four 15-year-old boys.

Reschke faces two counts each of felony injury to a child and felony lewd conduct with a child under 16.
The investigation is ongoing, and Reschke is expected to face more charges involving more victims, said Ada County Deputy Prosecutor Jean Fisher.

Reschke had several sexual encounters with boys at her home in the 400 block of North Sourwood Avenue beginning at the start of the school year, Fisher said. Reschke gave the boys alcohol during several of the incidents.

The boys are friends of Reschke's oldest child. She also has two children ages 5 and 10 who were home during at least one of the encounters, Fisher said.
Reschke is in custody at the Ada County Jail with bail set at $250,000.
Work Trap

(Vienna, Austria)
Trade unions are warning of the blurred line between work and leisure time as an increasing number of workers read and answer official emails in their free time using their smartphone or PC-tablet.

And say trade union bosses, not only is the out of work hours spent on work-related activity unpaid, it’s also unhealthy leading to stress.

Norbert Schunko of the trade union for private employees said: "It is clear from the study that three quarters of those workers, whose employers expect them to be permanently reachable, are not remunerated.

"If you look at legal cases at the trade union today, you will find that many people are risking a burn-out – not only because of their work inside the office, but because of their work outside of contractual working hours."
With the proliferation of cellular communications devices, I suspect that bothersome calls from work during off hours will become increasingly common and irritating to people who are off the clock. Expect demands for remuneration.

Connecticut Woman Accused of PTO Theft

(Ansonia, Connecticut)
Ansonia police Thursday arrested a Myrtle Avenue woman they say stole $21,000 from the Prendergast School Parent Teacher Organization.

Kelly Kahyaoglu, 48, surrendered to police about noon on a warrant charging her with first-degree larceny.

She was released on a written promise to appear at Superior Court in Derby July 11.

“This arrest is a result of a complaint made in January of 2012,” a prepared statement from Lt. Andrew Cota said. “The total amount that was determined to be missing from the account was approximately $21,000.”
The Prendergast PTO has instituted stricter controls on its funds.

Brit Teacher Had Regular Sex with Student

(Tredegar, South Wales) A 34-year-old English teacher at Rhymney Comprehensive School, Emma Ager, has lost her teaching credentials for engaging in repeated sex in her car with a 16-year-old boy.
A disciplinary hearing was told the English teacher told the boy: 'I bet you won’t be able to keep up with me during sex.'

The boy - referred to as Pupil A in the hearing - was studying his GSCEs when Miss Ager began driving him off for secret sex in a factory car park.
The former pupil, who is now 22, told the hearing: 'She said as long as I kept quiet everything would be OK.

'We would meet up daily or every other day.

'We would meet up an hour or two after school and drive and have sex in her car. We would drive to a secluded spot near a factory.

'We only ever had sex in her car.

'She said if people did find out I would be a legend. It continued for two months.

'One of my friends rang her up to ask for a threesome but she said she wouldn’t do it.

'It was common knowledge among pupils in the school but I don’t know if the teachers knew. I left a short time after it ended.'
Headteacher Meredydd James, 62, was also sanctioned at the disciplinary meeting for not protecting students by performing a proper investigation. James was suspended for three months and ordered to attend a safeguarding course.

Tip: John Ray
Homosexual "marriage"

The SCOTUS verdict recognizing homosexual "marriage" shows clearly how a self-selected liberal elite can run roughshod over the will of the people.  Effectively striking down a referendum result in California was particularly objectionable.  It is clearly the whims of a very unrepresentative Supreme Court that are sovereign in the USA, not the people or the States.

As a libertarian conservative, I think that marriage is no business of the State.  It should be a matter of private contract or a religious arrangement.  As it is however, the issue has become one of homosexual acceptance and the SCOTUS verdict has enforced that acceptance.  Again as  a libertarian conservative, I think such acceptance or non-acceptance should be a private matter, not one officially endorsed.

If homosexuals can find a church (Hint:  Episcopalians) that will let them wear pretty clothes and perform a ceremony it calls marriage, let them go for it  -- but leave the rest of us out of it.  As it is, we now have an official declaration that a union between two sodomites is equivalent to something which is basic to the survival of the human race -- a union between a man and woman.  And that surely disrespects and cheapens the standing of traditional marriage. Karl Marx would be pleased.

Alabama Woman Accused of Child Under 12 Sex Abuse

(Wilsonville, Alabama) A 24-year-old local woman, Janet Georgette Hall, has been accused of child sexual abuse.

Hall faces two counts of sodomy first degree, one count of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
Capt. Ken Burchfield with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department said the alleged crime took place in Columbiana. He also said the original report was filed March 21.

A warrant was issued for Hall’s arrest June 14 and she was taken into custody June 19.
Hall was booked into custody at the Shelby County Jail with bond set at $100,000.
Pot Farmers vs. Environmentalists

Marijuana farms on public lands in California are pissing off the environmentalists.
Tresspass growers, as they are called, have been known to clear cut forest groves, trash wild areas with irrigation equipment and human waste, and use large amounts of chemical pesticides. Now illegal pot growers are being blamed for another environmental impact – killing rare species like the Pacific fisher and the northern spotted owl through their indiscriminate use of rat poisons.

Marijuana growers who operate in remote areas have a serious pest problem. Rats and other rodents, it seems, like to eat cannabis plants, especially when they’re young and tender.[…]

To protect their plants, the trespass growers rely on vast quantities of rodenticides. But the rats aren’t the only victims. Wildlife often ends up as collateral damage.

According to an organization called Wildcare, the rodenticides also kill or sicken a long list of birds and beasts. Wild rodents such as opossums, skunks, and raccoons often take the bait and die. Raptors or other carnivores that prey on mice and rats often die from eating animals that have consumed anti-coagulant rat poisons. That list includes grey foxes, barn owls, Cooper’s hawks, red tail and red shouldered hawks, and great horned owls.
My suspicion is that the conflict between the dopers and the greenies will likely escalate and become violent.
Virginia Mom Accused of Child Neglect

(Suffolk, Virginia) A 25-year-old local mother-of-two, Lakeisha Danielle Myrick, has been arrested for allegedly leaving her two children home alone.

Myrick faces two counts of abuse and neglect of children and two counts of cruelty to children.
Officers went to the home at Heritage Acres Apartments, located at 1015 Nansemond Parkway, and knocked on the door of the apartment after receiving an anonymous tip that children at the home were regularly left there alone, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said in a press release.

A 3-year-old girl opened the door to police, and officers could see a 2-year-old girl standing unclothed nearby, Klink wrote in the press release.

Officers called out to see if anyone else was there, and no one responded.

When officers entered the apartment, it was “found to be unkempt with bug infestation and food on the floors,” Klink wrote.

Honeymoon's Over for Artless Carney

Regarding White House spokesman Jay Carney:

Arguably, Jay Carney has displayed an awareness level comparable to the Sgt. Schultz character ("I know nothing!") on the classic Hogan's Heroes sitcom.

Story
Sea Lamprey: Poison or Protect?

Authorities are conflicted regarding the sea lamprey. Some want them killed. Some want them protected.
A joint effort between U.S. and Canadian authorities is aimed to kill off sea lamprey in the St. Marys River linking the Superior and Huron lakes, even while others at Columbia River are worried about the potential extinction of the blood-sucking critters.

According to Soo Evening News, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada are collaborating to poison the sea lamprey larvae that live in the tributaries and threaten the salmon, trout, whitefish, and other commercial species.[…]

This is a drastically different tune compared to workers at the Bonneville Dam of the Columbia River, where $50 million is being spent to allow secure lamprey passage through the dam systems with fear of lamprey extinction.
Years ago, I saw some live sea lampreys caught in Lake Ontario. The slimy suckers had mouths as big as my fist. I had nightmares afterward.
Must not hurt feelings

Anybody whose feelings are hurt by reality -- such as the guy below  -- would seem to have a lot of unhappiness coming their way

"A burly Brooklyn man, 52, is suing his old boss at an art framing company who he claims refused to rehire him after seeing his massive weight gain.

Seth Bogdanove worked at Frame It In Brooklyn between 1994 and 2008, but when he went back in January, his employer Jerry Greenberg was shocked at his much larger frame.  'Oh my God, what happened to you? You got so fat!' Greenberg said, according to a lawsuit recently filed in the Kings County Supreme Court.  'There is no way you can work here at your size.  'You wouldn’t fit between the aisles.'

He said he weighed about 280 pounds when he left the frame shop, and now weighs 350 pounds because of medication he takes.  But the portly salesman claims he was still fit for work, and was 'hurt' Greenberg had dismissed him.

'I decided to sue him because he told me I was too fat to work for him and it hurt my feelings and made me feel like less of a person,' Bogdanove told ABC News."

McAfee Anti-Virus Uninstall

Security software pioneer, John McAfee, makes a video.
International fugitive, criminal suspect and self-described eccentric millionaire John McAfee has released a tongue-in-cheek video explaining how to uninstall the security software that still bears his name.

McAfee claims that one of the most frequent questions he's asked is how to get rid of the pernicious software, despite his having nothing to do with the company for the last 15 years. He says he has remembered how to do it and his solution – predictably, given his interests – involves drugs, seven strippers, and a handgun.

Caution: Video is NSFW. Easily offended visitors should forego viewing. It's vulgar.

McAfee obviously likes to keep his name in the news.
Taliban Murders Nine Mountain Climbers

(Peshawar, Pakistan)
Gunmen stormed a camp on Pakistan’s second largest mountain Sunday, killing nine foreign climbers, including a U.S. citizen, in a brazen assault that could deal a blow to the country’s efforts to jumpstart its tourism industry.

Pakistan’s Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, calling it retribution for a suspected U.S. drone strike last month that killed Wali ur-Rehman, the second highest-ranking leader of the terrorist group.
A U.S. spokesman declined to comment.
British Navy ditches toast to 'wives and sweethearts' for the first time in 200 years because there are now so many women at sea

Royal Navy sailors will never again make their traditional Saturday night toast and drink to ‘Our Wives and Sweethearts.’

The toast, which prompts the response, ‘May they never meet’, has been banned because there are so many women officers serving in the Navy.

The seafaring tradition – often made with a tot of rum – has stood for 200 years, but will now be changed so that servicemen and women toast ‘Our families’ instead.

The instruction was issued by the new Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral David Steel.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: ‘To reflect cultural changes and our modern and inclusive Navy, two of the naval toasts, used at mess dinners, have been updated.

‘The Royal Navy values the diversity and range of its personnel and it is only right that its traditional toasts should reflect the fact that women have been at sea for over 20 years.’

The other tradition which has changed is that the Tuesday night toast will be made to ‘Our Sailors’ rather than to ‘Our Men’.

The custom has been practised since Admiral Nelson’s era but after women first served in service vessels in 1990 it has become increasingly outdated. In 2012, Sarah West became the first female frontline ship’s captain in the frigate HMS Portland.

Other time-honoured toasts which follow the toasts to the Queen will remain unchanged.

On Mondays, a glass is raised to ‘Our ships at sea’, and on Wednesdays, sailors drink to ‘Ourselves (as no one else is likely to concern themselves with our welfare!)’.

On Thursdays they toast to ‘A bloody war or a sickly season’, referring to the better prospects of promotion in wartime in the 19th century and pestilence.

‘A willing enemy and sea room’ is toasted on Fridays, referring to the reluctance of other navies to face the British, and on Sundays they drink to ‘absent friends’.

The change to tradition was not well received by some former sailors.

Former Chief of Defence Staff Admiral Lord Boyce said: ‘In my view this is an unnecessary genuflection in the name of PC-manship and I have no intention of following it.  ‘It’s broken with tradition unnecessarily.

He told The Times: ‘Are we to await new orders telling us to “person the ship” or “person the sides”?’

(New York City)
The name “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” is well known as Mike Bloomberg’s gun-control arm, which he spends his personal fortune through on ads. Yet the group’s website is registered to, and handled by, official city government servers and staffers.

Domain names for MAIG were registered in 2006 by the New York City Department of Information and Technology, and have remained on official city web servers ever since.
It appears this situation is more than a simple 'Oops!'

Texas Teacher Guilty of Official Oppression

(San Antonio, Texas) A 44-year-old teacher at Salinas Elementary School, Cynthia Ambrose, has been accused of directing students to hit an alleged bully schoolmate.

Reportedly, Ambrose had students line up and hit a 6-year-old to show how it feels to be bullied.

Ambrose was convicted by a jury last Thursday on a charge of official oppression.
The May 2012 incident occurred when the boy was brought to Ambrose by his teacher, Barbara Ramirez, after he hit another student. The boy, now 7, told the jury this week he remembers getting hit by students and later telling his brothers, but they didn't believe him.

"It started out as a pat," Ramirez said. "Then she told the class, `Come on, hit him harder."'

Ramirez was granted immunity in exchange for her testimony. She said she reported the incident to the school principal two weeks later.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 29. She faces a possible year in prison.

NJ Teacher Guilty of Sex with Student - Updated
[Previous 4/16/13 post]
(Clifton, New Jersey) Clifton High School teacher Kristin Leone, 27, pleaded guilty yesterday to criminal sexual contact with a 16-year-old male student.

In accordance with the plea agreement, counts of sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, luring and enticing a child, criminal sexual contact and official misconduct will be dismissed.
Through a series of “yes” and “no” answers to questions asked by defense attorney Ronald Ricci of Woodland Park, Leone admitted in court Monday that the student took her hand and placed it on his genitals during a tutoring session at school on April 26 and that she kept her hand there for her own sexual gratification.

Leone, who was the boy’s social studies teacher, also admitted to inviting the student to her Clifton apartment on April 29 and to placing her hand on the boy’s genitals for her own sexual gratification.

Authorities had alleged prior to her guilty plea that the two had sexual intercourse at her apartment. While there was no sign that anyone was coerced, the relationship was not legal.
Leone will be sentenced on June 7 to one year in jail and five years of probation. Meanwhile, she remains free on bail.

[Previous 5/10/12 post]
(Clifton, New Jersey) A 26-year-old history teacher at Clifton High School, Kristin K. Leone, has been accused of engaging in sex with a 16-year-old student.

Leone faces charges sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal sexual contact, luring and enticing a child and official misconduct. According to Passaic County Prosecutor Amelia Valdes,
"Clifton police detectives conducted interviews, executed a search warrant and collected evidence relating to the allegations," according to the Prosecutor's office. "The evidence demonstrated that Ms. Leone engaged in sexual conduct with the child on two separate occasions," Valdes said, adding both incidents occurred in late April, the first in a Clifton High School classroom while the student was to be receiving extra help, the second, four days later at Leone's Clifton home.

The prosecutor said details are still being investigated, but said the contact initiated with text messages between the high school junior and his teacher, who used her personal phone. The prosecutor said it's not yet clear who started the texting, but added the incident is still under investigation.
Leone was booked and released on $100,000 bail.

Students Ordered to Support Homosexuality

(Columbia, Tennessee)
A Tennessee community college professor ordered her students to wear ribbons in support of gay rights and said those who supported the traditional definition of marriage are just “uneducated bigots” who “attack homosexuals with hate,” according to a legal firm representing several of the students in the class.

Students in a general psychology class at Columbia State Community College were directed by their professor to wear “Rainbow Coalition” ribbons for an entire day and express their support for the homosexual community, said Travis Barham, an attorney with the Alliance Defending Freedom.

Barham is calling for the college to punish Dr. Linda Brunton and order her to apologize to the students whose constitutional rights he believes were violated, according to a letter he sent to the community college president.

“Dr. Brunton essentially turned her General Psychology class into a semester-long clinic on the demands of the homosexual movement,” Barham said.
Professor Brunton also said it was her job to educate the ignorant and uneducated elements of society to correct their ‘hateful and close-minded’ views. What a gal, eh?

Rebutting Warmists:  Comment on a very hairy Dutchman

Richard Tol is a very skeptical man, an economist and rather  blunt, though not as blunt as I am.  I am sure we would enjoy drinking schnapps together, or maybe just beer.

But he seems not to have a clue about the type of dispassionate writing required for academic journals. Or perhaps dispassion deserts him when he is discussing fraud.

I am referring to his rebuttal of "Mr 97%" John Cook (2013) a rebuttal which was recently rejected by ERL.  ERL would always have found some reason to reject Richard's paper but Richard made it easy for them.  His paper was blatantly political and was full of speculation (about "fatigue", for instance).  ERL was right to reject it.  I would have sent it back for revision, however, as there was a lot of solid data in it that stood by itself as an effective rebuttal of the Cooker.  In my days writing for the academic journals I got about 40 critique articles published on politically loaded topics so I think I am a reasonable judge of what is required there.

Anthony Watts has put the paper up so you can judge for yourself. I am rather cross with Richard for spoiling the presentation of his basically sound work.  I would encourage him to delete the problem passages I mentioned and resubmit to another journal. Just the first paragraph of his paper would have sufficed as an introduction, for instance.  If properly done, the journal editor should not be able to guess the opinions of the author.

And when you have put up some statistics showing that the other guy is a complete fool, you don't say: "This guy is a complete fool".  You say:  "These discrepancies may be some cause for concern".

Judges Order California Prisoner Release

(Sacramento, California)
In a sharp rebuke to California Gov. Jerry Brown, a panel of three federal judges said Thursday they are fed up with continued delays in reducing the state's prison population and ordered Brown to take immediate steps to begin releasing inmates.

Their order demands that California's prison system population be reduced to 137.5 percent of capacity by the end of the year, a requirement that essentially means the state must begin finding ways to reduce the inmate population or face a contempt citation.
The judges' order translates into the release of 10,000 inmates by year's end.

NY Men Accused of Death-Ray Terror Plot

Eric J. Feight - Glendon S. Crawford

(Albany, New York)
The full complaint against two local men in custody reveals that undercover FBI agents posed as people who claimed to be aiding them in plans to develop an X-ray radiation emitting device to kill targeted people.

It also states that just days ago both 49-year-old Glendon Scott Crawford of Galway and 54-year-old Eric Feight of Hudson had plans to meet at a local hotel to test elements of the device.

"What they were engaged in, in terms of putting this particular device together with its truly deadly capability, that presented a significant danger to the public,” said Executive Assistant US John Duncan.

That danger, according to the lengthy criminal complaint, was fueled by Crawford's ill feelings towards Muslims.

According to the complaint, when referring to killing Muslims with the device, Crawford said it would be like "Hiroshima on a light switch," and, "everything with respiration would be dead by the morning."
Frankly, I'm unconvinced that Feight and Crawford could create an X-ray radiation emitter. However, they could get lucky. In any event, they got the attention of the FBI.

Both men are being held without bail and face possible 15-year sentences and $250,000 fines if convicted.

Most Wanted Fugitive Caught in Mexico

Walter Lee Williams

(Playa del Carmen, Mexico)
A former University of Southern California professor on the FBI's 10 Most-Wanted Fugitives list over alleged sexual exploitation of children has been nabbed in the Mexican resort city of Playa del Carmen.

The arrest of Walter Lee Williams, 64, who is accused of engaging in sex acts via webcam and in person with underage boys in the Philippines, comes a day after he was placed on the most-wanted list, ABC News reported.

Mexican Prosecutor Gaspar Armando Garcia Torres said Williams, suspected of traveling abroad to engage in sexual acts with children, was captured while drinking coffee near a park in the Caribbean beach town.
Williams is a professor of anthropology, gender studies and history.
Obama Calls for End to Catholic Education

(Northern Ireland)
The Catholic media is up in arms over comments President Obama made during a speech while in Northern Ireland for the G8 summit.

Obama made what is described as “an alarming call for an end to Catholic education,” in spite of the fact that it is considered “a critical component of the Church.”
Obama claimed that "Catholic education divides people and blocks peace."

I wonder if Catholics are being targeted by the IRS.
Black bishop not backing down

Hurling the "hate speech" accusation at his traditional Christian views didn't work

The Republican nominee for lieutenant governor in Virginia says that he is a Christian and has no reason to apologize for his history of hate speech against LGBT people, liberals and abortion providers.

It was only after African-American minister E.W. Jackson won the nomination at the Virginia Republican Party Convention last week that many became aware of his history of saying gay people were “perverted” and “sick people psychologically.”

“Homosexuality is a horrible sin, it poisons culture, it destroys families, it destroys societies; it brings the judgment of God unlike very few things that we can think of,” he said last year.

He has also called Democrats “slave masters” and compared Planned Parenthood to the Ku Klux Klan.”

“Liberalism and their ideas have done more to kill black folks whom they claim so much to love than the Ku Klux Klan, lynching and slavery and Jim Crow ever did, now that’s a fact,” Jackson said in a 2012 interview.

On Tuesday, Jackson told reporters that he had no intention of apologizing.

“I say the things that I say because I’m a Christian, not because I hate anybody, but because I have religious values that matter to me,” Jackson told reporters during a campaign event in Fredericksburg, according to The Washington Post. “Attacking me because I hold to those principles is attacking every church-going person, every family that’s living a traditional family life, everybody who believes that we all deserve the right to live.”

“So I don’t have anything to rephrase or apologize for. I would just say people should not paint me as one-dimensional.”

Florida Mom "Parties" with Minors

(Jacksonville, Florida) A 40 year-old local woman, Cherelyn Laura McDonald (aka Cher), has been accused of turning her home into a "party house" where minors were encouraged to consume alcohol and engage in sexual activity.

McDonald faces counts of lewd and lascivious battery to a minor 12 to 16 years old, encouraging or enticing a person under the age of 16 to engage in sexual activity, and contributing to the delinquency of a child.
The heavily redacted police report makes note of "sex" and "alcohol" consumption at the Arlington home.

Neighbors say McDonald had two children living with her, a boy and girl with the oldest a teenager.

The Department of Children and Families has joined the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office in the investigation.

DCF spokesman John Harrell says the mother's two children have been placed with family members while the Child Protection Team works to determine more about the home environment.

WV Teacher Fired for Inappropriate Texts to Boy

(Beckley, West Virginia) Following an investigation by the school system regarding alleged inappropriate behavior, a teacher at Trap Hill Middle School, Lori Lester, was fired.

The Raleigh County Board of Education voted unanimously to terminate Lester amid allegations that she sent inappropriate text messages to a male student.
Charleston attorney Brett Preston had accused Lester of sending inappropriate and sexually explicit text messages to Preston’s client, Lester’s 13-year-old student at Trap Hill Middle, in February and March.

The male student’s parents took him out of the school following the texts and home-schooled him for the remainder of his eighth-grade year.

The student's mother worked as a secretary for the school system at the time the alleged texts were sent, according to Preston.
The West Virginia State Police and Child Protective Services continue to investigate.
Connecticut Teacher Accused of Threats to School

Stacey Goodnow

(Norwalk, Connecticut)
A troubled Greenwich middle school teacher was ordered into mental health treatment and prohibited from going near her school after police said she left a message on a colleague's phone threatening to "shoot up" the facility.

Stacey Goodnow, 46, of Melrose Avenue, Norwalk, was arraigned at state Superior Court in Norwalk on Monday on a disorderly conduct charge.

Judge William Wenzel ordered Goodnow to not contact the teacher she left the message with, or Western Middle School, where she works; she is not allowed within 300 feet of the building located on Western Jr. Highway in Greenwich.
A court date is scheduled for July 11.
Football commentators fired for unkind skit

Audio of the skit is here.  Player with Lou Gehrig's disease portrayed as speaking badly.  Certainly poor taste but rough humor is common among sportsmen.  Should someone lose their job over it? America is becoming a namby pamby nation

The now-former hosts of Mayhem in the A.M. probably suspected that, at some point, the name of their show would have literal meaning.

790 The Zone in Atlanta has announced that the “three individuals” involved in a bizarre and unfunny bit involving former Saints defensive back Steve Gleason have been fired.

The station has announced the move without naming the (former) hosts of the show:  Stephen “Steak” Shapiro, Nick Cellino, and Chris Dimino.

The audio of the gag, which featured a caller with a computerized voice pretending to be Gleason, has surfaced.  It’s not humorous, under any reasonably stretch of the subjective concept of what is and isn’t funny.
